| CLASS I (ONE) Fixed (non-removable) ball, but usually has a 11/4 inch square receiver. This is usually adequate for bike racks and motorcycle trailers CLASS II (TWO) Looks just like a class I(one) but handles up to 3500 pounds (again, your vehicle may be rated for less) Good for utility trailers, small boats, bike racks. CLASS III (THREE) The most common hitch for trucks, vans, minivans, and SUV's. Can handle up to 5000 pounds (once again, check your vehicle specs). Has a 2 inch square receiver opening and handles the widest variety of accessories like bike racks, cargo carriers, heavy trailers. CLASS IV (FOUR) Basically a class III hitch designed to handle wieght-distribution equipment. Could have a wieght rating as high as 12,000 pounds. |

| WHAT KIND OF WIRING DO I NEED? If you're installing a hitch only for a bike rack, then no wiring is needed. 4-POLE FLAT The connector has 4 wires; ground, left turn/brakelight right turn/brakelight running lights. The most common wiring, good for most trailers that don't have electric brakes. 5-POLE FLAT Used mostly on boat trailers that have hydraulic surge brakes with a reverse override feature. The fifth wire is the back-up lights of the tow vehicle, used to tell the surge brakes not to engage when the trailer is being pushed backward. 6 POLE ROUND Used on some mid-size trailers with electric brakes. Not that common anymore 7 POLE ROUND (WITH FLAT PINS) The most common connector for large trailers with electric brakes. You will also need a brake controller when towing trailers with electric brakes BRAKE CONTROLLERS IF THE TRAILER EXCEEDS 5000 POUNDS IT WILL HAVE ELECTRIC BRAKES Brake controllers help control the brakes on the trailer when you apply the brakes to the vehicle. |
Two reasons, one or both reasons may apply to your vehicle. All trailers only have two bulbs on each side one for running lights(also called parking lights) and the other for turn signal and brake. So one bulb handles two functions it flashes to indicate turning, and stays on steady to indicate braking. Most vehicles these days have separate bulbs for these two functions; one for turn signal, one for braking. In order to combine both these two functions into one bulb requires the use of a power converter. The other reason you may need a power converter is because many modern vehicles do not have enough power in their turn signal and brakelight circuits to power additional bulbs on the trailer. We at Ziebart will select the proper converter for you. |
